Uluru Art Print
Uluru is a place that has always fascinated me and it was one of the first places in Australia I wanted to visit as an adult. I was lucky enough to do so in my early twenties and I remember the feeling of awe the first time I saw it majestically rising from the desert floor, growing bigger and bigger as we drove towards it. The colours are blinding, the feeling of peace and connection visceral. Australia’s Anangu people have lived there for over 40,000 years. Today they continue to care for Uluru while sharing this very special, unique place with the world.
In grade 9 I wrote a poem about Uluru which I thought I would share with you but it’s quite a bit longer than I remember so I’ve only included a few stanzas for you. It’s not exactly Shakespeare but I think you’ll agree my fascination for Uluru even at a very young age shows through.
“In outback Australia there’s a place that I’ve been. A place like no other that you’ve ever seen.
The Dreamtime is strong there it’s power so great. The spirits are strong, they hold no hate.
The Anangu are part of it, for them it holds no fear. It’s their past and their present, their far and their near.
The mood there can change quick, as quick as lightening. One minute it’s calm, the next it’s frightening.
The little ones sleep all through the night. Can you see their fires kindle and glow with great might.
Look at the rock now, be careful don’t shove. Next year I’ll come back, to this place I so love.”
