Despite what people think, Proteas are not native to Australia but rather are native to South Africa. However, as both continents once belonged to the supercontinent Gondwanaland, they belong to the same family Proteaceae which includes Australia’s Banksias, Waratahs, Grevilleas and Hakeas. Theirs is an ancient family and are considered ‘living fossils’ as they were blooming when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. They certainly are the Kings of the flower kingdom.
