Acacia melanoxylon, commonly known as Blackwood, Hickory or Tasmanian Blackwood, is one of the dominant plants in my neighbourhood. In winter it’s puffy, creamy flowers bloom en masse. After the flowers come the characteristically curly seed pods. Each pod is brimming with hard seeds which are wrapped in a pinky/orange aril that attract the birds who disperse them. Every time I see one it reminds me of home.
